3 Reasons Apple Don’t Go for Higher Refresh Rate

Probably from the end of 2019, the culture of “high refresh rate screen” has become popular in the mobile phone circle, and then Android phone manufacturers have started a new round of arms race. Within two years, the entire industry has taken on a brand new look. The current screen refresh rate of Android phones is 120Hz, even 90Hz seems a bit stingy.

At the same time, there is no response from Apple to this technology. It still retains the traditional 60Hz normal screen. However, mass consumers have not given up on the persistent pursuit of the iPhone. Why?

Reasons

Reason 1: The fluency is already good enough, no need for superfluous to avoid affecting battery life.

Why do mobile phone manufacturers need to increase the screen refresh rate? Regardless of the marketing component, increasing the screen refresh rate can indeed make the dynamic picture smoother, that is to say, this is one of the means to improve the visual fluency of mobile phones.

The fluency of the Apple iPhone is well-known in the industry, the iOS system is very easy to use, and the security of the software ecology is enough to kill Android in seconds. The screen quality of the new generation iPhone 12 is also excellent enough. Samsung’s customized OLED screen has strong color expression and a comfortable screen look and feel. It is not necessary to increase the refresh rate.

In this case, if an OLED screen with a higher refresh rate is to be equipped, it means that the power consumption of the mobile phone will be difficult to control, and the total battery life will be shortened. On the contrary, the user experience will be greatly reduced. Is it “superfluous”?

Because of this, Apple’s engineering team is not willing to waste the cost of increasing the screen refresh rate. The manufacturing cost can be saved a little bit!

Reason 2: Apple does not need to pursue marketing gimmicks, just goes its own way.

After so many years of observation, I believe many people will find a phenomenon:

Apple is not willing to blindly follow the trend and has never participated in the configuration competition of Android mobile phone manufacturers, but the number of fruit fans has not decreased because of this.

This is mainly because the core competitiveness of Apple’s iPhone is the iOS system and the A-series processor. This is its product feature. Without the support of the operating system and processor chip, the iPhone will become useless! In the same way, as long as these two major selling points can be grasped, all other functions in the phone are embellishments.

Whether to increase the screen refresh rate from 60Hz to 90Hz or even 120Hz? For Apple, this is a typical “secondary contradiction.”

In the absence of accidents in the iOS system and A-series processors, Apple is reluctant to do such a thankless thing. Even if the screen refresh rate is increased to 120Hz, the sales of the iPhone 12 series will not increase significantly. If this is the case, there is really no need to go to great lengths in this regard!

Reason 3: The domestic mobile phone industry is too cruel, and the parameters determine everything, but it is meaningless to blindly increase the refresh rate!

Does the refresh rate of the mobile phone screen matter? The answer is yes, but its importance may not be as exaggerated as the manufacturer claims.

The higher the parameter, it means that the screen can give the user more visual information per unit of time, which will make the system dynamics and dynamic pictures look smoother. Put the 60Hz normal refreshing screen and the 90Hz high refreshing screen together, and slide the interface or webpage at the same time, you will find that the latter is indeed silkier, and the afterimages almost disappear.

But if this parameter is adjusted too high, such as 120Hz, 144Hz, 165Hz, etc., the significance is not great.

Because the recognition range of the naked eye is limited, the refresh rate is too high, and the naked eye can’t distinguish it!

After understanding this, let’s look at the behavior of Android phone manufacturers. They are comparing parameters with each other, not to optimize the product experience, but just to get marketing gimmicks. The market competition environment is quite bad. Apple’s product features are too distinctive, and the pressure of competition is relatively small, so naturally, they don’t want to join in the fun.

Conclusion

When we choose a mobile phone, we should consider its comprehensive strength, and not limit our eyes to a certain point, otherwise, we will draw a biased irrational conclusion. Thanks to a variety of reasons, Apple does not need to waste too much money on the issue of whether to increase the screen refresh rate. These can only be regarded as icing on the cake. I wonder if everyone agrees with this view?
